Barclays no longer do the nectar rewards, which is a shame as it made this card even better. Also the intrest rate has gone up since we last looked at this card. If you are a big nectar rewards fan then have a look at the new Amex nectar card. |

Review "Barclaycard Classic (0% on balance transfers and purchases for 9 months) Barclaycard recently launched their new Classic card, which now provides the cardholder with 0% on purchases and balance transfers for 9 months (although a change to 12 months has been mooted). This was, in part, due to the adverse publicity received by the credit card issuer for their “0% for life of balance offer” which was criticised by the Office of Fair Trading, as it was effectively impossible to avoid interest after the first month. Personally, we weren’t big fans of the old Barclaycard Classic, not least because the long-term fixed balance transfer rate of 6.9% was easily bettered by the Capital One Platinum, which offers the same deal at 3.9% (and throws in 0% on purchases for 6 months too). However, we have to say that we’re pretty impressed with the changes that Barclaycard have made to their cards. The 9-month 0% balance transfer and purchase period is now followed by a lower standard rate of just 14.5%, as opposed to the old standard APR of 17.9%. This, at first glance, may not seem particularly appealing, but you must remember that all Barclaycards come with a one year extended warranty (see below) on most goods purchased using the card and you get the Nectar rewards scheme thrown into the equation too. Quite simply, Barclaycard have really pulled a great card out of the bag with the new Classic, and we feel that it’s a great improvement on the old offering. The purchase APR is variable (you may end up with a standard APR that is higher than the advertised rate), but many credit card issuers operate on the same lines and if you don’t like the standard interest offered, you can always think about switching cards after you’ve benefited from the 9 month 0% rate on balance transfers and purchases. Barclaycard Barclaycard was the first credit card to arrive in the UK, and still remains the most popular. Having suffered a downturn in the number of new applicants in the first couple of years of the new millennium, Barclaycard has carried out extensive promotional campaigns. This is focused around two key themes: firstly, a sponsorship of the Premier League and secondly, an additional range of add-on services under their promotional tag “It just gets better.” Barclaycard must be commended for including an additional years warranty on all goods purchased with any Barclaycard. This applies irrespective of the manufacturer/retailer warranty – if, for example, you have a 3 year warranty with your product, purchasing with a Barclaycard would extend this to 4 years. Barclaycards get an extra star in our overall rating for this alone. |
