| Review: |
Launched in 1998, Egg was one of the pioneers in online, low-cost, banking. They passed on some of the cost-savings to customers, thus improving the deal that UK consumers received across many financial products, including credit cards. Unfortunately, the current credit card offering from Egg, like many issuers out there, is really quite bland. Egg provide a middle-of-the-road offering that will appeal to a broad range of consumers out there (think of the Labour party), but in our opinion, there’s better options to be had. However, the one saving grace of this card is the balance transfer offers. Unlike most balance transfers that will only accept existing credit card debt, the Egg Card deserves some praise for bucking the trend and accepting debt from overdrafts and personal loans, as well as the usual debt from credit cards and store cards. Additionally, they have recently launched the Egg anniversary balance transfer offer, which allows Egg Card holders to transfer balances each year, on the anniversary of their account opening. This is an interesting idea, although whether people will save any money from this is another matter - it may still be cheaper to transfer your balances to another card next year. However, if you’re looking for a cashback card (which you should consider if you repay your balance each month), then cards such as Amex Blue and Accucard High Cashback offer 1% and 0.8% cashback respectively, against Egg’s 0.1%, although the Amex Blue card charges a noticeably higher standard APR of 18.9%. However, it should be pointed out that Egg do still offer some very generous cashback deals when products are bought from selected retailers, such as 10% cashback when purchasing from Virgin Wines and 3% cashback when buying consumer electronics from Empire Direct Online. If you are after a low APR card, with cashback meaning less to you, then Capital One's Platinum card (formerly called the "No Hassle" Platinum) offers 10.9% against Egg’s 13.9% and arguably has better introductory offers. If you want a card that does provide a bit of cashback and a relatively low APR, then Egg does come up quite good. It is very similar to quite a few other cards on the market (such as Accucard-based products), but also includes 0% on both balance transfers and purchases, whereas many card issuers still provide no offer on purchases. Overall, this is an average card, but will appeal to individuals new to online banking that are looking for a name they can trust. |
| Verdict: |
This is a great card if you want to do balance transfers over the next 3 years. |
