Since we last reviewed the Accucard Low Interest card not a lot has changed. On the positive side the interest rate has gone down so we are still going to giving the card 3 stars. |

Accucard was founded in 2000 and is now part of the Lloyds TSB group. Accucard provides hybrid credit cards which enable users to choose between either paying a low rate of interest on the outstanding balance or receiving cashback on purchases. Customers can use a sliding scale to select options somewhere between these two extremes, and can improve their options further by paying an annual fee (again variable on a sliding scale). Accucard provide their credit card to other companies to “sell on”. The easyMoney, Lloyds TSB Create and More Than credit cards offer a re-branded Accucard. Although there are small differences between the levels of interest rates, cashback levels are fairly similar amongst these competing credit cards. You can also expect the credit scoring to be carried out on similar grounds for each card. Therefore, if you are unsuccessful in applying for one of these credit cards, you are unlikely to be accepted for one of the others in a similar time period. On first glance, these credit cards can seem quite appealing. Consumer choice is becoming more important as this sort of personalised product enters the financial services market. However, whereas choosing options on a new car, such as features like air-conditioning, or paint colour, will be regarded by most people as fairly broad, this kind of personalised credit card only really offers a choice on two factors: the interest rate/APR, and cashback. Although innovative, this unfortunately leads to a “Jack of all trades, Master of none” credit card. For both APR and rewards, it is usually preferable to find a much better deal by choosing a market leading product in either of these fields. |
