Comments and Reviews
Aimed At: Part of the Barclays student account package. Can also be applied for separately by university students looking for a credit card.
Updated Review: Barclays no longer do the nectar rewards, which is a shame as it made this card even better. Also the intrest rate has gone up since we last looked at this card. But on the plus side you can now take two optional payment breaks each year. So this is great for chritmas and your summer holiday. But remember you will still be paying intrest for the 2 months. If you are a big nectar rewards fan then have a look at the new Amex nectar card.
Review: Barclaycard Student

As student cards go, the Barclaycard is as good as it gets. Most banks and lenders, when dealing with university undergraduates, tend to reduce additional credit card benefits, such as purchase insurance.

The Barclaycard Student, however, offers the lot. As well as the extended warranty, you get purchase insurance and a price-match promise with the card. To help students get going, they also throw in 0% purchase APR for the first 3 months, although this is admittedly geared towards getting inexperienced students hooked on using their plastic. The interest rate is 17.9%, which is standard fare for average-credit rating Barclaycards, yet very competitive when compared to other student offerings. The initial credit limit is £600, so the actual value of interest should be manageable.

Quite frankly, if I could turn back the clock to my university days (sigh), I’d actually make the effort to get this card. The only thing students need to be wary of is an increase in their credit limit – as with all cards, this is reviewed regularly and usually gets increased with frequent card use. As it increases, it is quite easy to end up spending more, so students need to restrain themselves to ensure that they don’t end up with lots of credit card debt come graduation.

Barclaycard

Barclaycard was the first credit card to arrive in the UK, and still remains the most popular. Having suffered a downturn in the number of new applicants in the first couple of years of the new millennium, Barclaycard has carried out extensive promotional campaigns. This is focused around two key themes: firstly, a sponsorship of the Premier League and secondly, an additional range of add-on services under their promotional tag “It just gets better.”

Barclaycard must be commended for including an additional years warranty on all goods purchased with any Barclaycard. This applies irrespective of the manufacturer/retailer warranty – if, for example, you have a 3 year warranty with your product, purchasing with a Barclaycard would extend this to 4 years. Barclaycards get an extra star in our overall rating for this alone.
