Switch have spent considerable resources re-branding their card as Maestro. Maestro is affiliated to the MasterCard network, and the Switch brand is slowing being phased out, as the firm focuses on launching the Maestro brand in the UK.

The reason for this is that, up until now, Switch has been a UK-only player. The Maestro brand has international recognition, as MasterCard have signed up many national players into the network who are all re-branding with the Maestro name. This means that in the near future, many foreign users will be able to use their debit cards in the UK, and similarly, UK debit card holders will be able to use their card overseas, wherever they see the Maestro logo.

Foreign spending has been possible for many years using a Visa Delta debit card, as this works using the same network as Visa.

Remember that as with most credit cards, you will usually be charged an international transaction fee every time you use your card outside the UK. This includes online purchases in currencies other than British sterling.
