Debit Cards
The two biggest UK debit cards are Visa Delta, which runs on the Visa network,
and Switch, a UK
company that has now formed an alliance with
MasterCard, using the
Maestro brand.
The Switch Card Scheme was launched in 1988 by a consortium of banks:
Natwest, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Midland Bank (now HSBC).
These founder members originally administered the company, but an independent
company was subsequently launched to manage and market the Switch scheme as the
network expanded.
