Mastercard & Visa
Visa and MasterCard are international member organisations of financial
institutions. Between them, the networks span approximately 45,000 banks and
other institutions - within the EU, Visa alone has 211 million cards supported by a network of
5,000 financial institutions within the region.
The focus of these companies is to improve the speed and
efficiency of moving money, most notably in transactions using credit and debit cards. The companies address their
strategy of increasing card transactions through the continued development and
implementation of ever-improving technology.
New technologies to improve the security on cards (such as chip and pin cards) and
to lower the transaction costs associated with the use of these cards is mainly
down to the investment of these giants of the credit card world.
By lowering costs and improving the customer experience, MasterCard and Visa
hope to increase the usage of their networks. With greater acceptance of new
technologies across the world, particularly the internet, the big guns of the
credit card world believe that consumers will continue to switch from
transactions involving cash to bits of high-tech plastic. It seems that both
MasterCard and Visa will remain powerful players in the credit card world for a
long time to come.
