Cash Advance Fees
In addition to the higher cash advance
interest you can expect to pay when withdrawing cash on your credit card,
most banks will charge you a cash advance fee for making withdrawals. It does
not usually make that much difference whether you use an ATM machine, or if you
go into a bank branch and make a withdrawal, although some currency exchange
counters may charge a further fee on top of this.
A typical credit card cash advance fee would be 2% of the transaction value,
with a minimum charge of £2. This would mean that for withdrawals up to and
including £100, you would pay the fee of £2. This fee also applies when using a
debit card for cash
withdrawals outside the UK , or in any UK bank branch that is not part of the
same group.
Again, there are a few exceptions to this, the most notable being the Nationwide.
They only charge 50p for cash advances within the UK, or £1 outside the UK.
Cash machine withdrawals using debit cards are usually free in most ATM
machines in the UK, although this usually applies from cashpoints / ATMs used
outside banks, building societies and large supermarkets, rather than the cash
machines you may find in smaller shops and local stores.
